The History of KSH
The First Steps
The start came at the hands of a devoted group of sincere volunteers whom God enabled to serve this vulnerable segment of society. At that time in Kuwait, only the Social Care Homes of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor provided attention.
This faithful group persevered hand in hand and gave all they could. They worked tirelessly day and night, fully aware of the responsibility they had willingly embraced. They continued the legacy of giving rooted in the forefathers of this land, past and present, so that it would continue into the future.
From the Society’s inception they spared no effort to meet the needs of children with disabilities, both materially and morally. As needs grew and responsibilities multiplied, some undertook the crucial task of fundraising to cover rising costs and to expand and improve services.
Their work did not stop there. They carried the voices of persons with disabilities to international forums, called for equal treatment and recognition of their rights, and sought opportunities for them to prove themselves as constructive members of society.
The founders gave this cherished group of our community their time, love, and devotion beyond description. To them all we extend love, appreciation, gratitude, loyalty, and prayers.
Beginnings are often hard, especially more than half a century ago, when daily life was very different from today in all fields and facilities.
Despite hardship, the story of the Kuwait Society for the Care of the Disabled began with a blessed group of virtuous, selfless women. They saw the urgent need to provide physical therapy, rehabilitation, and care to persons with disabilities after noticing cases that demanded cooperation and solidarity to support them and their families.
The beginning was in an old house about 54 years ago. From that house the journey started and continued without interruption to this day, by the grace of God.
The house was old and modest, and resources were limited. The will, however, was firm. The arms were strong and united. The resolve was solid. Work was carried out quietly, without vanity or personal gain, striving for the public good, seeking only God’s acceptance.
The Start of KSH
In 1971, the Society started by caring for 30 children with disabilities. Its first goal was to fill a gap left by government institutions by establishing a charitable, community-based organization for children with multiple and severe disabilities. It sought to give them hope and the will to live, to instill confidence and ability, and to help them integrate into society. It provided all necessary care, including medical, psychological, social, educational, and rehabilitative services.
The initiative to found the Society goes back to two esteemed ladies, Dr. Munira Abdulwahab Al-Qatami and Munira Khaled Al-Mutawa, who studied abroad and saw the progress other countries had achieved. Their genuine desire to serve the nation grew, especially after recognizing the issue of disability and the lack of adequate services then available for children with disabilities.
The idea was welcomed and supported by many. Among them were Abdulrahman Salem Al-Ateeqi, then Minister of Finance, Mudhi Sultan Al-Essa, and a group of 28 founding members who worked to officially register and recognize the Society.
